Youth Softball Starts Co-ed
By Skylar Sabetta
Strike 1! Strike2! Strike 3! You’re out! The crowd goes wild, cheering for the fielding team of a Santa Clarita Youth Sports and Recreation softball game. However, there have been some changes to this division concerning the players of this league, because the number of players participating in this league have decreased over the years.
Santa Clarita has been participating in the youth sports program for (number of years) and gives the SCV an opportunity to partake in a wide variety of youth sports. The city provides sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, snag golf, running, and other recreational activities like camps and clinics. However, there happens to be one sport that has changed since previous years, softball.
Over the years, the Santa Clarita youth softball was broken up into divisions based on the players’ birth years. There would be co-ed t-ball, Mini Miners girls and Mini Miners boys, Miners girls and Miners boys, and Majors girls and Majors boys.
However, the youth sports softball league has made a change to the original division plan. For the 2015 softball spring season, the Majors girls and boys division has combined, forming a co-ed Majors softball division.
Ariana Vargas, current 7th grade Monarch student here at Sierra Vista is a part of this league. “I feel like this season is going to be a lot more interesting and intense; it’s definitely going to be fun!” Vargas commented.
She also said that she thought this idea may have some positive and negative effects. Vargas said, “Players may learn the benefits of working together and cooperating with others not just those of the same, but opposite gender.”
However, Vargas feels that this change may be somewhat unfair because boys are known to have better athletic ability than girls. Because of the this, the coach may feel that it is necessary to put boys on the more fun, and adrenaline charging positions, and the girls playing the less thrilling positions.
